Work is underway on improvements to the Rotary boat launch at Kin Park in Chemainus.
A donation of $10,000 was made by the Rotary Club of Chemainus toward the upgrades, a bequest from Bert Beggs.
“He was quite an avid boater, an appropriate place to use the funds,” said the Rotary Club’s Tom Andrews.
A cheque presentation was made by Andrews and Mike Beggs at the boat launch Tuesday to Municipality of North Cowichan Mayor Al Siebring.
“We’re responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of it along with the municipality,” noted Andrews.
The donations has allowed the municipality to move along with the project more quickly, covering a large chunk of the cost.
“I don’t know if they would have done it this year without our contribution,” conceded Andrews.
The bumpers and side rails are being replaced, with the boat launch slated to be closed until Friday, May 14 to complete the work.
Andrews noted recycled materials were being used, including high tech rubber material from old tires for the bumpers.
Some new concrete was also laid at low tide Tuesday morning in advance of the other work.
